Gary is a Doctor of Traditional Medicine and a fully trained Sangoma in the Zulu tradition of South Africa. His Zulu name is Dabulamafu which means 'to break through the clouds' or 'to bring clarity'. He began his long journey to become a Sangoma in 1990 while working as an aide to Nelson Mandela in South Africa. Mandela recognized a calling in Gary and introduced him to his traditional healer, Horatio Zungu, who became Gary's first Gobela or teacher. After a diagnosis of Stage 4 metastasized prostate cancer in 2022, Gary returned to South Africa to complete his training as a Sangoma. Gary is a gifted intuitive and diviner. He reads the Bones so well that many call him Mr. Mathambo or Mr. Bones. Gary's mission is to bring African traditional medicine to North America and beyond.
