Snake Medicine: A Message of Transformation, Release, and Renewal

Today’s message is Snake Medicine—a powerful sign of transformation, release, healing, and renewal.

In my book Messages from the Universe, I explore the many ways the Universe communicates with us through nature, animals, repeating patterns, unexpected encounters, and moments that capture our attention. Nature is always speaking, but its messages are often quiet. We must be present enough to notice them and willing to consider what they may be reflecting in our lives.

This morning, as I took the dog outside, I caught sight of the end of a snake’s tail disappearing into the rocks near the entrance to my home. I didn’t see the whole snake—only the final glimpse of it as it slipped from view. That detail felt meaningful. Sometimes the Universe doesn’t show us the entire picture. We are simply given a sign that something has passed through, something is leaving, or something hidden is quietly shifting beneath the surface.

Snake Medicine invites us to shed what has become too tight, too limiting, or no longer alive with possibility. A snake does not question whether it has outgrown its skin; it instinctively knows when it is time to release it. We, however, often hold on—to old identities, beliefs, relationships, habits, fears, and ways of protecting ourselves—even after they have begun to restrict our growth.

Because the snake appeared at the entrance to my home, its message also felt connected to thresholds, boundaries, and new beginnings. A doorway marks the place between our inner world and the world outside. The snake may have been asking:

What energy am I allowing into my life? What needs to leave? What am I ready to welcome across the threshold?

Seeing only the tail may have carried an additional message: the ending is already underway. Something may be coming to completion, even if we cannot yet see where the change is leading. We do not always need to chase after what is disappearing or understand every detail. Sometimes our work is simply to recognize that a cycle is ending, honor what it taught us, and allow it to go.

I needed to move several of my rocks to find the snake, which had tucked itself beneath a large piece of rose quartz. The symbolism felt especially meaningful. Rose quartz carries the energy of love, compassion, emotional healing, and gentleness—and that was exactly how this encounter needed to be handled. I gently removed the snake and transported it to the wetlands behind my home, releasing it into an environment where it could safely continue on its path.

There may have been another message within that moment: transformation does not have to be harsh or forced. What no longer belongs in one space can be released with love and guided toward the place where it now belongs. We can honor what has crossed our path without allowing it to remain within our personal boundaries.

Snake is also an ancient symbol of life-force energy, spiritual awakening, regeneration, and healing. Its closeness to the Earth reminds us to remain grounded as transformation unfolds. Change does not always arrive loudly or dramatically. Sometimes it slips quietly through the rocks, asking us to pay attention to what we almost missed.

This is one of the central teachings I share in Messages from the Universe: the natural world is not separate from our spiritual journey. Animals, birds, trees, weather, stones, and other elements of nature may appear at meaningful times, offering guidance that speaks directly to what we are experiencing. When something in nature captures our attention, stirs an emotion, or appears in an unusual way, it can be helpful to pause and ask, Why did I notice this—and what might it be showing me?

    Today, Snake Medicine asks:

What have I outgrown? What am I ready to shed? What is quietly leaving my life—and what new version of me is waiting to emerge?

May we trust the transformations we cannot yet fully see. May we release what has completed its purpose with love, protect the sacred thresholds of our lives, and move forward renewed.
