As a former geology professor, I would like to alert people to two scams. 1. "Smelt Quartz" is commonly sold as a variety of quartz, especially from many eBay vendors. "Smelt Quartz" is not quartz at all -- it is common glass, which is made from melting quartz in the presence another compound (called a flux) which lowers the melting temperature. Glass is not crystalline, whereas quartz and other minerals (with few exceptions) are crystalline. Most people can't tell the difference, but glass is optically isotropic (doesn't polarize light) whereas quartz is anisotropic (polarizes light). Glass also has a lower density, which you might be able to detect by its heft, and "smelt quartz" usually has unnatural looking streaky patches in it. I have ordered many natural quartz crystals from eBay and haven't had any problems until recently. A vendor called zjpyxlzj077 sent me a fake quartz, unlike the real quartz pictured in the photo. "Smelt quartz" does not have any of the properties of true quartz, which is one of the main types of crystals used in shamanic healing. 2. "Master Shamanite" is a garden variety black limestone with a few fossils in it. Nothing about it, such as fossils or trace minerals like strontianite and zircon, is unusual. The commercial value of this stone is a few cents, but it is sold for 10's of dollars. Clearly a scam.
I use healing stones in the Inca tradition. They are empowered through my own healing and part of a healing bundle (mesa). I also use very clear quartz crystals for extraction work. In my opinion, it is important to avoid using artificial materials (like "smelt quartz") or rocks that are sold at highly inflated values (like "Master Shamanite"). It is useful to smudge any stones or crystals you buy to remove energy that it is carrying from previous owners (unless it is gifted to you from a healer).

Thank you for your information gdhhgd, I didn't know about smelt quartz so this is helpful to know and I enjoyed learning the difference between glass and quartz.
Just as a matter of personal opinion (ie there is no expectation that others agree or follow), I gave up buying minerals and crystals many years ago after seeing how the earth is essentially raped for these beautiful gems purely for commercial purposes. It just didn't sit well with me that something obtained for entirely spiritual purposes had started it's journey to the daylight in such disrespectful conditions. The few pieces I do have all came to me naturally ie. found on walks etc except for four which I purchased early on and one of those was a gift from a friend (piece of tumbled amethyst).

Greetings All ! I wanted to add my .02 to this. I'm new here, but have been working with rocks, stones and healing energies for quite awhile now Quite a few of the "fancy" stones like Master Shamanite, Azeztulite, Rosophia etc come from a company called Heaven and Earth. they have an annoying habit of taking fairly common stones and giving them fancy names and then charging a bundle for them Azeztulite is quartz, Rosophia is pink granite, and as our Geologist friend mentioned Shamanite is Black Limestone/Calcite. I had not known that smelt quartz was glass--thanks for that. Now, it is glass made out of quartz or regular glass ? I do know the glass is made up of silicon dioxide with various trace elements added. Um, That's also what Quartz is if memory serves...?

There's another even huger crystal scam. Yellow citrine, one of, if not THE most needed healer of these times, is the only real citrine. It is colored by iron, and usually a very pale yellow or beer color, often smoky.
99.99% of citrine is actually amethyst, colored by manganese, and heated in the earth or a kiln to turn orange.
True citrine has always been the most expensive and prized quartz, so early on they figured out how to make fakes. Yellow topaz is also often sold as citrine.
