i dont know what you call illuminations exactly but you can start by relaxing (like astral trip, when you are about to sleep but still awake)....it ll probably not work the first times but with time you ll meet spirits to help you
dont forget to ask for something before you start relaxing (you can ask to meet your totem, to find help about a problem you are facing, etc.. anything positive and nice :D )

If you are referring to the inca tradition of illuminations then yes. You must first shed the things in your life before you work with others. Its like trying to clean a dirty window with a dirty rag, You may imprint some of your "stuff" onto the other person.
