The monastery's location was chosen to facilitate ascetic practices such as fire ceremonies, mountain-walking meditation (see "Marathon Monks of Mt Hiei" by John Stevens), waterfall purification, and meditative seclusion, all accompanied by chants of mantras, dharanis and sutras. But also we were fortunate to find this powerful spot less than 2-hours north of San Francisco so that the altruistic bodhisattva life of serving the people is realized.
